What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Quick, what’s the purpose of life? What's the secret of the universe?

Just kidding. The purpose I'm talking about is what you choose to spend this season of your life working toward.  You'll likely have more than one purpose you wish to serve over the course of your life. Let's concern ourselves with this next one though shall we?

Some say that the purpose of life is to live it. Plato stated "the purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away." Well, he actually said it in Greek but still.

The point is, your purpose can be defined any way you like. Some prompts to help you gain clarity on yours are:

  • What's important to you?

  • What do you want to end?

  • What do you want to start?

  • What's the next step in building your business, family, or life?

However you define it, it's important to determine what you want to do in this world. Will you dedicate your next 18 years to raising children? Will you spend the next 5 years growing your business? Will you spend the next 2 years writing your book? How about volunteering for your preferred organization? Perhaps you'd like spend the next year reading, writing, and understanding yourself better.

No matter what you choose to work toward, you'll change the world. It may be for 3 people or for 3 million. Time will tell. It's the effort and the focus that matter.

"I want you to remember that that call that you feel inside of you to serve with your stories, your expertise, with your voice, that is your sign. That is your divine sign, that you are meant to do this. That's the only sign you need. You need no one's permission. You don't need anyone to tell you [t]hat your experience or your clarity or your credentials are…ready for this or not, it's irrelevant. The only sign you need is that call, that feeling within you. So, I want you to first just remember that you already know that this is for you to move into.

- Michelle Barry Franco

You don’t need to know exactly how the rest of your life will play out. You don’t have to decide once and for all what you want to be when you grow up. Clarity of purpose simply means you see the next section of your path, even if you don't know exactly where it leads. It's the real-life version of a vintage Choose Your Own Adventure book but with fewer ancient curses and less quicksand.

So, what does the next section of your path look like? Do you have a gut feeling about it or will you need to take some time to think it through?
